An honest look at ultrasonic deterrents
Why this page is cautious
Ultrasonic pest devices are sold extremely hard online, often with claims that do not survive contact with how hearing works. We sell one, we think it has real uses, and we would rather explain the limits than join in.
What is actually true
High frequency sound is genuinely unpleasant to many mammals. Cats often move on. Possums travelling a route will sometimes take a different one.
Birds hear roughly the range humans do. So on a bird, the ultrasonic element is doing much less than the category name implies, and on this unit the strobe and the optional predator sound are doing more of the work.
The physics that limits it
High frequencies are directional, they do not carry far, and anything solid stops them. A unit facing across a deck treats that deck. It does not treat the garden beyond, it does not go round the corner of the house, and it does nothing to a bird on the roof above it.
That is not a fault in this particular device. It is true of every ultrasonic product ever sold.
A correction to the standard listing
The manufacturer's copy lists five North American mammals, none of which lives in New Zealand. The realistic targets here are cats, possums working along a route, and some birds with the strobe and sound enabled.
Where it earns its place
A deck, a balcony, a vegetable bed, a garage entrance: somewhere a specific animal keeps arriving by a specific route and there is nothing to fix a barrier to. Motion triggering means it fires when something moves rather than running constantly, which is easier on the battery and slower to become background.
Where it does not
Birds on a ledge. That is a barrier problem and we sell the barrier for twelve dollars a strip. Buying a seven hundred dollar unit for a job a spike does better is the mistake this page exists to prevent.
Setting it up
Mount it at the height animals actually enter, facing the route in. Tune the sensitivity so it is not triggered by washing on a line. Wipe the panel and the sensor window when you think of it, because a dirty sensor stops it triggering and looks exactly like a flat battery.
Watch your own animals for a few days afterwards. Dogs hear well above our range and some react badly.
