About this product

The honest version of the ultrasonic pitch.

A motion activated solar unit with ultrasound, a strobe and an optional predator sound. It is the weakest category we sell, and this page says why before it says anything else.

A motion activated solar unit that combines ultrasound with an optional strobe and an optional predator sound, mounted wherever animals come in.

Radar detection means it fires when something moves rather than running all day, which is easier on the battery and slower to become background noise.

It mounts on a fence, tree, shed, deck or eaves, and there is no mains supply to run.

Before buying: ultrasound is the weakest deterrent category we sell, and it works far better on mammals than on birds.

If the problem is birds on a ledge, buy the spikes instead. They cost less and they do not stop working.

This page is written to talk some people out of the purchase, which is unusual and deliberate. Ultrasonic deterrents are sold hard across the internet, often with claims that do not survive contact with how hearing works, and we would rather explain than join in.

Two things are true at once. High frequency sound is genuinely unpleasant to many mammals, and cats in particular often move on. Birds, however, hear roughly the range humans do, so the ultrasonic element does much less to a pigeon than the marketing implies. On this unit the strobe and the optional predator sound are doing more of the work on birds than the ultrasound is.

The other physical limits are worth knowing. High frequencies are directional, do not carry far and are stopped by anything solid. A unit facing across an open deck covers that deck. It does not treat the garden, it does not go round the corner of the house, and it does nothing to birds already on the roof above it.

One correction to the copy this product usually carries: the standard listing lists those animals, chipmunks, raccoons, deer and skunks. None of those animals lives in New Zealand. Here the realistic targets are cats, possums working along a route, and, with the strobe and the sound, some birds.

So: buy it for a deck, a balcony, a vegetable bed or a garage entrance where a cat or a possum keeps arriving, and where there is nothing to fix a barrier to. Do not buy it as the answer to pigeons on a parapet. We sell the right product for that on another page and it costs twelve dollars a strip.

Does ultrasonic bird repelling actually work?

Less well on birds than on mammals, and we would rather say so. Birds hear roughly the range we do. On this unit the strobe and the predator sound do more of the work on birds than the ultrasound.

So why do you sell it?

Because on cats and possums it is genuinely useful, and because on a deck or a balcony there is often nothing to fix a barrier to.

What should I use for birds on a ledge?

Spike strips, at twelve dollars a strip. They cost less, they make no noise and they do not stop working.

What animals does it realistically deter here?

Cats, possums travelling a route, and some birds with the strobe and sound enabled.

The listing mentions raccoons and skunks.

That is the manufacturer's standard copy and it is written for another country. None of the animals it names lives in New Zealand, so we have not reproduced it.

How far does it reach?

It treats the area it faces. High frequency sound is directional, does not carry far and is stopped by anything solid, so plan on covering less than an open field figure suggests.

Will it go round a corner?

No. If you need two aspects covered, you need two units or a different approach.

Does it run constantly?

It has motion triggered, continuous and frequency cycling modes. Motion triggered is easier on the battery and slower to become background.

How does the motion detection work?

Radar detection with adjustable sensitivity, so you can tune out the washing on the line.

Does it need mains power?

No. It has an integrated solar panel and a rechargeable battery.

Where should I mount it?

At the height the animals actually enter, facing the route in, on a fence, tree, shed, deck or eaves.

Will it bother my dog?

It may. Dogs hear well above the human range. Watch the animal for a few days after installing it and move it if the dog avoids that part of the garden.

Will it bother my cat?

That is rather the point if the cat is not yours. If it is yours, expect it to avoid the area.

Can people hear it?

Most adults will not hear the ultrasonic element. Children and teenagers often can, and the optional predator sound is audible to everyone.

Will the neighbours hear it?

Not the ultrasound. They will hear the predator sound if you enable it, so think about that before you do.

Will animals get used to it?

Some do. Motion triggering and varying the mode slows it down.

Is it weatherproof?

The housing is weather resistant with a sealed rear cover and an angled body to shed rain.

How long does the battery last?

It charges through the day and runs at night. A dirty panel or a week of heavy overcast is what shortens it.

Does it need maintenance?

Wipe the panel and the sensor window. A dirty sensor stops it triggering, which looks exactly like a flat battery.

Will it protect fruit?

Not reliably. Netting is the product for a crop.

Will it stop possums getting on the roof?

It may discourage them at the point they get up. It does not compete with cutting back the branch they use.

Will it stop rats?

No. Rats need trapping.

Can I use it indoors?

It is intended for outdoor use and needs sun for the panel.

Can I use more than one?

Yes, and on a larger site facing them at different approaches works better than side by side.

Should I buy this or the sonic repeller?

The sonic unit is for a large open site and makes real noise on a cycle. This one is motion triggered and better suited to a garden or a deck.

Is this the best thing you sell for birds?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Barriers beat scare devices on birds every time.

Can I return it if it does not suit?

That is not a fault in this particular device. It is true of every ultrasonic product ever sold.

Where it earns its place

A deck, a balcony, a vegetable bed, a garage entrance: somewhere a specific animal keeps arriving by a specific route and there is nothing to fix a barrier to. Motion triggering means it fires when something moves rather than running constantly, which is easier on the battery and slower to become background.

Where it does not

Birds on a ledge. That is a barrier problem and we sell the barrier for twelve dollars a strip. Buying a seven hundred dollar unit for a job a spike does better is the mistake this page exists to prevent.

Setting it up

Mount it at the height animals actually enter, facing the route in. Tune the sensitivity so it is not triggered by washing on a line. Wipe the panel and the sensor window when you think of it, because a dirty sensor stops it triggering and looks exactly like a flat battery.

Watch your own animals for a few days afterwards. Dogs hear well above our range and some react badly.
